Creating Intentional Community

September 17, 2021

“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” This famous motivational quote by Jim Rohn couldn’t be truer. We are in constant interaction with others’ thoughts, feelings, and actions. We influence each other. It means that if you’d like to change an individual, this usually requires outer change – of people you’re close to, content you’re consuming, and so on.

Choose who and what you interact with

Yes, there are family members or coworkers that may be impossible to avoid completely. If they live by different values, act differently that you would, accept it with compassion. Just be mindful not to adopt their behaviors or ideas if they’re not healthy for you. However, you have great control over who we open to. Are you intentional with who you allow in your life? Do your friends and partners support your growth or rather hold you back? Maybe they are an echo of some old, harmful parts of yourself that you’re trying to leave behind? Do they share the qualities you care about? Let it be truth, resilience, authenticity. It’s not about creating a group of people with identical mindsets. On the contrary – it’s healthy and inspiring to have our ideas challenged in constructive ways. What matters most is that your community supports your growth and doesn’t hold you back.

Books, podcasts, movies, and other content forms we take in also have an impact over the way we see the world. Never underestimate their power. Be mindful what you take in.

Find a community that will support your transformation

Planning and initiating an intentional community is a complex task, but it can result in a lovely community to live in. It’s important to connect with like-minded individuals who will support you in your process. There are many ways to step into an intentional community. For example, you can join a support group or take on coaching classes. Intentional support groups are planned, are built around vision, they’re oriented toward specific topics and goals. Working one-on-one with a qualified coach is also a good way to get support.
